Blue-Mesa-Reservoir
is located in southwest Colorado in the Curecanti National Recreation Area. It's the largest body of water located entirely within the state of Colorado. Blue Mesa Reservoir is approximately 20 miles long and has 96 miles of shoreline. It's also the largest lake trout and Kokanee salmon fishing lake in the United States. Situated at 7,491 feet above sea level, Blue Mesa Reservoir is surrounded by beautiful mesas and deep narrow canyons, and there is no entrance fee to enjoy all of this natural beauty. Four boat ramps are located on the lake and there are two marinas that offer boat rentals, tackle, fishing licenses and food. The marinas close for the season on October 15th. Guided fishing trips are also available at Blue Mesa Reservoir. In addition to fishing and boating, other activities include wind surfing, water-skiing, horseback riding and ice-fishing in the wintertime. Hiking is very popular, and there are literally too many hiking trails in the area to list. Nearby Gunnison offers a 5,000-acre archeological site and a historic narrow-gauge mining railroad to explore. Other nearby attractions include the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area. Several visitor centers are located around the lake at Blue Mesa Point, Elk Creek Marina and Cimarron.

Blue Mesa Reservoir Weather & Climate

Central Colorado has a very complex climate. Even places a few miles apart can experience entirely different weather patterns. The valleys are classified as a semi-arid, continental climate, which becomes a mountain or alpine climate at higher elevations. Humid microclimates may also exist in some places. Abundant sunshine and low humidity is typical in all areas. Summers are mild to warm, and thunderstorms can cause a sudden drop in temperature. Winters are cold and snowy, especially in the higher elevations of the Rocky Mountains. Solar radiation penetrates the thin atmosphere high in the mountains, which results in very pleasant temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers are often pictured in very light clothing, even though they're surrounded by snow.
