Breckenridge
is one of Colorado's premier resort towns, set against pine and aspen groves in the Central Rocky Mountains, about 98 miles west of Denver. This quaint Victorian town offers an incredible variety of activities year round, including the world class Breckenridge Ski Resort and two acclaimed Nordic Centers. Golf is another popular sport in town, and the Colorado Golfer rated the Breckenridge Golf Club, designed by Jack Nicklaus, as the "Best Mountain Course in Colorado." Breckenridge also offers both indoor and outdoor ice skating rinks and a 69,000 square foot recreation center that includes everything from racquetball and a skateboard park to sauna and hot tubs. Kayak Park in Breckenridge is the longest whitewater-kayaking park in the state, and the city maintains a number of trails of various terrain for hiking and biking. In addition to outdoor recreation, Breckenridge has a vast array of dining and shopping opportunities and special events. Enjoy the sounds of cool jazz at the annual "Genuine Jazz" festival in June, kick up your heels at the Oktoberfest in September and watch artists from around the world create unbelievable works of art at the Annual Snow Sculpture Competition in January. Central Colorado has a more complex climate than most states in the United States. Even places a few miles apart can experience entirely different weather depending on the topography of the area. The valleys are classified as a semi-arid, continental climate, which becomes a mountain or alpine climate at higher elevations. Humid microclimates may also exist in some places. Abundant sunshine and low humidity is typical in all areas. Summers are mild to warm, and thunderstorms can cause a sudden drop in temperature. Winters are cold and snowy, especially in the higher elevations of the Rocky Mountains. Solar radiation penetrates the thin atmosphere high in the mountains, which results in very pleasant temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers are often pictured in very light clothing, even though they're surrounded by snow.
