Hamilton
is a small community located in Moffat County in the northwest corner of Colorado. It's near the Dinosaur National Monument in the Uinta Mountains. Two-thirds of the Dinosaur National Monument is situated inside Moffat County and offers hiking, horseback riding, rafting, camping and wildlife viewing, including one of the last remaining herds of wild mustangs. Dinosaur National Monument is often called "the little Grand Canyon," and has fantastic photographic opportunities. A word of caution; be sure to check the weather forecast before heading out for a hike in the mountains as conditions can change rapidly in the high mountain prairies. Other recreational sites near Hamilton include Brown's Park and Elkhead Reservoir. Brown's Park, once known as "Brown's Hole" by outlaws, was a popular hideout due to its' location near three state borders. This park also offers river fishing, hiking, camping, birding and wildlife viewing opportunities. The area surrounding Hamilton is also known as the "Elk Hunting Capital of the World," with one of the largest herds of elk found in North America. People travel from all over the world to hunt here.

The extreme northwest corner of Colorado has a rugged topography, which causes large variations in climate within short distances. At mountain summits, temperatures remain low, averaging less than 32 degrees F. Snow-covered mountain peaks have frigid nighttime temps, occasionally as low as 50 degrees F. below zero. Summer in this region is mild and refreshing. The average temperature in summer is around 60 degrees F. Precipitation west of the Continental Divide is more evenly distributed throughout the year than in the eastern plains. For most of western Colorado, winter is the wettest season and June is the driest month. When there is sudden warming in the spring at the higher elevations, snow melt may cause extensive flooding.
