Canon-City
is located in central Colorado and is the county seat for Fremont County. It's about two hours south of Denver. As of 2005, the estimated population was 16,000. Canon City is a Colorado Home Rule Municipality and is known for being home to nine state and four Federal prisons. It also lies along the Arkansas River, which makes it a popular recreational spot for tourists. The town was laid out in 1858 during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush, and the Canon City Downtown Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Canon City is the gateway to the Royal Gorge Region, which offers a number of exciting attractions and dozens of recreational activities. Among the attractions is the Royal Gorge Route Railroad, which is Colorado's first premier scenic train. From March through December, it takes passengers on excursions that offer breathtaking views of the Royal Gorge. Enjoy a five-star lunch or dinner, embark on a murder mystery train ride or a special Santa Express train ride to the North Pole. Other attractions include the royal Gorge Bridge and Park. The bridge is the second highest suspension bridge in the U.S., and also on site is an aerial tram and incline railway and a petting zoo. For those who crave the outdoors, Canon City is one of the best places in the state for rafting and kayaking on the Arkansas River. Other things to do include hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and rock climbing. Downtown Canon City is very walkable and is filled with art galleries, boutiques, antique shops and good eateries.

Central Colorado , in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, has a very complex climate. The valleys are classified as a semi-arid, continental climate, and the higher elevations are mountain-alpine climate. Humid microclimates may also exist in some places. Abundant sunshine and low humidity is typical in all areas. Summers are mild to warm, and thunderstorms can cause a sudden drop in temperature. Winters are cold and snowy, especially in the higher elevations of the Rocky Mountains. Solar radiation penetrates the thin atmosphere high in the mountains, which results in very pleasant temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers are often pictured in very light clothing, even though they're surrounded by snow.
