Grand-Mesa is the largest flat-topped mountain in the world. It's located in western Colorado and stretches for approximately 40 miles east of Grand Junction between the Colorado River and the Gunnison River. Altogether, the Grand Mesa covers an area of about 500 miles. The Grand Mesa National Forest lies on top of the mesa and features over 300 lakes and thousands of acres of public land. In the spring, it's covered with beautiful wildflowers, and golden aspens brighten the landscape in fall. Winter snows bring opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and snowshoeing. The top of the mesa remains snow-covered late into the spring. The Crag Crest Trail is a 10-mile hiking trail located at the highest elevation on the Grand Mesa and offers spectacular 360-degree panoramic views. Wildlife to watch for in the area includes moose, bears, elk, and falcons. Colorado Highway 65, which is a designated National Scenic and Historic Byway, traverses the mesa through old-growth forests, meadows and past crystal-clear lakes. At Lands End Overlook, at 6,000 feet above sea level, one can stop and take in awe-inspiring views of the valley below and the forested mountains beyond. Towns along the Mesa include Cedaredge, Skyway, Powderhorn and Mesa. The latter is considered the "gateway" to the Grand Mesa Scenic and Historic Byway and offers cafes, gift shops and a country market.

Grand Mesa Weather & Climate

West-central Colorado has a four-season climate that is either semi-arid or alpine, depending on location. Places that are just a short distance apart can have different weather. Valley areas have a semi-arid climate, while the mountains have an alpine climate. The wettest season in western Colorado is usually winter, while June is the driest month. Summers are mild in the mountains, sometimes with a high of only around 60 degrees F. Thunderstorms are possible, and sometimes cause the temperature to drop dramatically. At the higher elevations, winters are cold with lots of snow, but with abundant sunshine in between storms. Lower areas on western slope of the Rockies have summer temperatures similar to those on the plains - hot and dry.
