Hotchkiss
is located along the North Fork of the Gunnison River at the crossroads of Highway 92. Crawford, Black Mesa and The Black Canyon of Gunnison National Park are to the south, and to the east the road becomes Highway 133 which takes you to Paonia, Somerset and the McClure Pass over which the Roaring Fork Valley, Glenwood Springs, Snowmass, and Aspen, is accessed. To the southeast are the West Elk Mountains, with the twin peaks of Mount Lamborn and Landsend Peak forming a scenic backdrop to the town. Hotchkiss is a quiet town of around 1,000 residents, with an additional 1,000 people residing on the mesas surrounding the town. This western style town offers antique shops, restaurants and shopping and a variety of recreational opportunities within the National Park and along the Gunnison River. The Delta County Fairgrounds is located in downtown Hotchkiss. Special events in town include the Delta County Fair in August, the North Fork Valley Bluegrass Festival in June, the Sheep Dog Trials in May and the Black Canyon Art Exhibit in June.

Hotchkiss Weather & Climate

West-central Colorado has a four-season climate that is either semi-arid or alpine, depending on location. Places that are just a short distance apart can have different weather. Valley areas have a semi-arid climate, while the mountains have an alpine climate. The wettest season in western Colorado is usually winter, while June is the driest month. Summers are mild in the mountains, sometimes with a high of only around 60 degrees F. Thunderstorms are possible, and sometimes cause the temperature to drop dramatically. At the higher elevations, winters are cold with lots of snow, but with abundant sunshine in between storms. Lower areas on western slope of the Rockies have summer temperatures similar to those on the plains - hot and dry.
