Woodland-Park
, the "City Above the Clouds," is located 8,465 feet above sea level on the north slope of Pikes Peak, about 18 miles northwest of Colorado Springs. This historic resort town of approximately 7,600 residents is surrounded by a million acres of Pike National Forest. It began as a mill town and business center for the surrounding area in 1891, but today the economy is mostly fueled by tourism. It's the largest town in Teller County and offers fine restaurants, shopping, full services, RV parks and campgrounds and various hotels, motels and bed and breakfast inns. Nearby attractions include the famous mining towns of Victor and Cripple Creek, the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, the Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak and the Mueller State Park & Wildlife Area. Fishing is available in Manitou Lake, just a few miles north of town, and Rampart Range Reservoir, which is just eight miles away. Ice fishing is available in wintertime. There are many well-groomed trails in the Woodland Park area for hiking, biking, horseback riding and cross-country skiing. Golf is also available and there are over 25 acres of city parks, including Meadow Wood Park, Memorial Park, Bergstrom Park and Lion's Park, which offer picnic areas, playgrounds and ball parks. To reach Woodland Park, go west on Highway 24 just 18 scenic miles from Colorado Springs.

Central Colorado has a more complex climate than most states in the United States. Even places a few miles apart can experience entirely different weather. The valleys are classified as a semi-arid, continental climate, which becomes a mountain or alpine climate at higher elevations. Humid microclimates may also exist in some places. Abundant sunshine and low humidity is typical in all areas. Summers are mild, and thunderstorms can cause a sudden drop in temperature. Winters are cold and snowy, especially in the higher elevations of the Rocky Mountains. Solar radiation penetrates the thin atmosphere high in the mountains, which results in very pleasant temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers are often pictured in very light clothing, even though they're surrounded by snow.
