Ouray lies in a picturesque river valley at 7,700 feet above sea level, in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, northeast of Telluride. It is often called the "Switzerland of America." The San Juan Mountains and the Uncompaghre National Forest surround this small town of approximately 800 residents. The Alpine Loop is located on the east side of town (from Lake City and Silverton,) and the San Juan Skyway winds its' way through town following a north-south canyon. Mt. Sneffels, one of Colorado's famous "Fourteener's," is directly west of town. The town of Ouray is the site of many natural hot springs, several of which have been developed into spas and health facilities. It's also considered one of the premier ice climbing spots in America. Other recreational opportunities in Ouray include hiking, mountain biking, fishing and hunting, horseback riding, skiing and jeep tours of the high country surrounding the town. The spectacular mountain scenery also provides unparalleled photographic opportunities. Like many of the other small towns of the region, Ouray begin as a mining town and many of the original 19th century homes and buildings still remain today. The historic Beaumont Hotel, for example, was built in 1887, and is listed on the National Historic Register. Be sure to check with the local Historical Society for a walking tour of Ouray's private homes.

Ouray Weather & Climate

Southwest Colorado has a four-season alpine climate. This region is on the Western Slope of the Continental Divide at 7,200 feet above sea level. The combination of high desert plateau and Rocky Mountains to the north and east create an unusually mild climate. Temperatures here are much cooler in the summer than most of the surrounding southwestern United States. The area is also blessed with 300 days of sunshine per year. The climate of Colorado, in general, is difficult to describe because it varies so widely from place to place. The climate of any particular place in this region is profoundly affected by differences in elevation, and to a lesser degree, by the orientation of mountain ranges and valleys and wind direction. Wide variations occur within short distances.
