Silverton is located in southwest Colorado, the only town (incorporated municipality) in San Juan County. The population is approximately 500. The community of Silverton is a former silver mining town, most of which today is a designated National Historic Landmark District. Tourism supports the town, which is linked to the city of Durango by the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, another National Historic Landmark. The train takes visitors on a thrilling ride behind a historic, steam-powered engine through the stunning San Juan Mountains. It runs May through October with service to Silverton and November through April with service to Cascade Canyon. Other things to do in Silverton includes exploring the surrounding ghost towns and old mining camps via jeep or ATV. Jeep rentals are available if you don't have your own, and guides will also take you into the high country. Camping, mountain biking, fishing, horseback riding, and hiking are a few of the other activities to enjoy in Silverton and the San Juan Mountains. In winter, the snow-covered mountains provide the perfect setting for alpine and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, ice skating, sledding and snowmobiling. There are lots of multi-use trails, easily accessed from the town of Silverton or from U.S. Highway 550.

Silverton Weather & Climate

Southwest Colorado has a four-season alpine climate. This region is on the Western Slope of the Continental Divide at 7,200 feet above sea level. The combination of high desert plateau and Rocky Mountains to the north and east create an unusually mild climate. Temperatures here are much cooler in the summer than most of the surrounding southwestern United States. The area is also blessed with 300 days of sunshine per year. The climate of Colorado, in general, is difficult to describe because it varies so widely from place to place. The climate of any particular place in this region is profoundly affected by differences in elevation, and to a lesser degree, by the orientation of mountain ranges and valleys and wind direction. Wide variations occur within short distances.
